- Mitchell (born 28 June 1934) is an Irish botanist and writer. Mitchell was born in Galway and educated at St.
- Mary's College and University College, Galway, graduating with a BSc in 1956.
- In 1961, he obtained his doctorate at University of Rennes 1, from which time he was employed at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
- In 1962, he was appointed lecturer with the Department of Botany at U.C.G.
- In 1976, he was Associate Professor of Botany.
- He studied Irish lichenology and contributed to the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, in addition to other journals.
